Carlton Square, Newcastle upon Tyne
This project involved the construction of a four storey office block on a very tight city centre brownfield site. This technically challenging project was built using a structural steel frame with piled foundations. The building had to straddle the city’s main utility services which ran under the site. Located adjacent was the retaining wall of Newcastle’s very busy Central Motorway. Scaffolding with debris netting was used to prevent any materials falling on to passing vehicles.
The building has a striking contemporary design with the use of extensive curtain walling to the eastern elevation overlooking the motorway and a mixture of coloured render to the south and west. It fits neatly into a very small inner city site. Internally the open plan offices have raised access flooring for ultilty sevices and cable management.
Very careful planning, close liaison and team work was required to bring this contract which was completed in April 2007 to a satisfactory conclusion.
