Hotel Du Vin

City Road, Newcastle upon Tyne

This project involved the conversion of a locally listed Victorian building and construction of a four storey timber framed extension.

The brick built former Tyne Tees Steam Shipping Company offices form the main reception and dining areas with bespoke bedrooms on the first floor with views over the Tyne.

The new bedroom block extension to the north was built over the Grade II listed Victoria Tunnel and required careful design of the foundations which bridged the underground structure.

The Tunnel is a local tourist attraction and Metnor provided a financial contribution to the charitable trust  which runs it to enable a new entrance to be formed near to the hotel. The new build element is striking with extensive use of cedar cladding and curtain walling giving it an appropriately nautical look.

A central courtyard with a purpose designed timber clad smoking cabin links the old and the new parts of the development which was completed in September 2008.
