Lidl

Tyne Dock, South Shields

The project involves the design and build of a Lidl Supermarket with external hardstanding, landscaping and customer parking. Set in a dense residential area, the initial works involved the demolition of an existing Lidl store and adjacent Oakdale Lodge Care Home.

The steel framed building is rectangular in plan and built on pad foundations with a GFA of 2243m2 and a further 202m2 on the first floor. The roof is a 4 degree mono-pitch with Ondatherm sheet coverings. Two small flat roof areas with Sarna coverings are included for the staff terrace on the first floor and loading dock. The external elevations are of Poroton blockwork covered with render and rainscreen cladding panels with curtain walling for the main front façade and entrance. Materials and colours were selected to comply with Lidl specifications.

The first floor areas are constructed of a mixture of Flowforge grate flooring on a steel frame and precast concrete hollowcore slabs built off load-bearing internal walls. These provide mechanical and electrical plant room space and staff facilities. The project commenced on site June 2016 and completed in January 2017.
